Share photos, music and links with care

A practical Dearly reference for upload limits, music playback, link privacy, editing and deletion.

Choose memories people are happy to share

A photo may be meaningful to you and uncomfortable for someone else. Ask before sharing a private family picture, a child’s image or a moment another person considers sensitive. Remove addresses, identity documents and other confidential details from the story. Dearly gifts are accessible to anyone holding their link; they are not password-protected or end-to-end encrypted.

The editor accepts up to three JPG, PNG or WebP photos. You can select a photo under 12 MB; the browser resizes it to a maximum 1600-pixel long edge and converts it to JPEG. The prepared upload must be under 1.8 MB per image. Crops differ between cover previews and memory displays, so inspect the finished recipient view before sharing.

Make sound an option, not a requirement

Built-in melodies are synthesized for Dearly rather than streamed from a music service. A recipient can mute the sound, and browser settings may prevent playback. The words and photos should therefore carry the message by themselves. A quiet recipient in a shared space should still have the complete experience.

For custom audio, use a supported MP3, M4A, OGG, WAV or WebM file under 3 MB and confirm that you have permission to share it. Buying a song or subscribing to a streaming service does not automatically give you permission to upload that recording. A recording you made yourself can also contain music or voices belonging to others. If rights are unclear, use a built-in melody or no music.

Save the right link and understand deletion

Send the public gift link to the recipient and save the separate management link for yourself. A management link is a key: its holder can edit or delete the creation and see invitation replies. Browser bookmarks on one device are a convenience, not account recovery. Save the link somewhere private before clearing browser storage or changing devices.

You can edit a creation without changing its gift URL. Deleting it removes the live record, uploaded media and event responses from the service and makes the shared link unavailable. It cannot delete copies someone has already saved, screenshots or a forwarded message. If you only need to remove one photo, edit the creation instead of deleting the whole gift.

Examples to make your own

Practical ways to write a personal message, plan an invitation, and share memories with care. Every example is a starting point: replace the details with your own.

Ask before using a photo

I’m making a small birthday message for Lina. Would you be comfortable with me including the photo from our picnic? The link could be forwarded, so I’ll leave it out if you prefer.

Send the gift without exposing the key

I made a little moment for you. Here is your gift link—open it whenever you have a quiet minute. Sound is optional.

Before you send

  • Confirm permission for every photo and custom recording.
  • Preview with sound muted as well as enabled.
  • Keep management and guest-response links private.
